A smile is one of our most noticeable features and one that can be worth a thousand words. Smiling can make you seem happy, friendly, confident and successful. Unfortunately, many people dislike the color, size and position of their teeth, which causes them to avoid smiling, and in extreme cases, avoid any social situations where they may have to eat or talk, and draw attention to their mouth. Thankfully, there is now no need to live with less than perfect teeth. Porcelain veneers are a popular cosmetic dental procedure that can transform the appearance of your smile and restore your confidence and self-esteem.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are finger-nail type coverings that are applied to the outer enamel of your teeth to improve their appearance. Each set of veneers is custom-designed to create the best effect for your teeth, such as leveling the size of your teeth, or giving the illusion of closing small gaps between them.
Veneers are a popular choice for patients who have tried teeth whitening, but have been unable to lighten their teeth to their desired level of whiteness. Veneers can be created in any desired shade, meaning that a truly white smile is possible, even for patients with severely discolored teeth.
How are porcelain veneers applied?
To apply your veneers, we will first need to file down some of the existing enamel on the outside of your teeth. Don’t worry – this is done under local anesthetic so you won’t feel any pain. However, it is important to realize that natural enamel doesn’t grow back, so once you are committed to veneers, there is no going back!
Once some of the natural enamel has been filed down, the veneers can then be bonded to your teeth using a special adhesive, which is then set using a special light. They will then be polished to a beautiful shine.
Lumineers are a popular variation of conventional veneers, and offer some unique benefits. Some of the advantages of choosing Lumineers include:
Natural appearance – The primary reason that many patients choose Lumineers is because they are aesthetically closer to natural teeth than regular veneers. This is partly because they are highly translucent, and also because they are…
Thinner – Lumineers are around 0.2mm thick, which is much thinner than traditional dental veneers.
Simpler fitting – The thinness of Lumineers also means that there is no need to reduce the natural enamel of your teeth. Instead, they can be applied directly on top, reducing the overall treatment time and eliminating the need for any anesthetic.
Reversible – As there is no need to file down the natural enamel on your teeth, Lumineers can be removed if required, and you can rest assured that your natural teeth underneath are fully intact.
Durable – Lumineers have been shown to be considerably more durable than conventional veneers, and with care and attention, could last for more than 20 years, making them a great long-term investment in your smile.
