Prepping for Your Summer Vacation: Dental Emergency Essentials to Take Along

Posted on 6/20/2016 by Dr. Thomas Young
A red sign with white letters on it saying emergency. If you are going on a summer vacation this year, you've got a lot of things to remember to pack.

However, if you have kids, it is especially important to grab a first aid kit, including some dental emergency essentials. Make sure that you are grabbing these important items before you head off on your trip.

A Tooth-Saving Container

If your child loses a tooth - especially if it is a permanent tooth - it is important to have a place to store it quickly. A small container that could hold liquids is a good option for keeping your tooth safe until you can visit your dentist.

Gauze
If you are experiencing bleeding, whether this is soft tissue damage or the result of a tooth falling out, you'll need a way to clean it. Sterile gauze is a great option, and it won't take up much room in your suitcase.

Pain Killers
Over-the-counter painkillers like Advil or Tylenol are a good addition to any first aid kit, including one for your dental health. Just remember that if you are taking one of these medications for a toothache, don't believe the old wives' tale that calls for placing the medication directly on the tooth.

Floss

While you should always be traveling with floss to begin with, it can be a good addition to your dental emergency kit in case you get something stuck in between your teeth. This could prevent you from taking drastic measures like using a tool or something sharp to remove the item.

You should also travel with your dentist's contact information so that you know who to call in the event of an emergency. If you'll be out of town, research potential emergency dental providers, specifically those who take your dental insurance, so that you have some options if you need treatment away from home.
