Is Flossing Really Important?

Posted on 1/20/2016 by Dr. Thomas Young
A man flossing his teeth. Our teeth are really important. We use our teeth multiple times a day. Part of caring for your teeth, is flossing. Dr. Young asks that his patients floss every evening before they go to bed. We want you to remove as much debris or food particles as possible from your mouth, which is what causes decay and leads to gum disease.

When should I have my child start to floss?

In the past, dentists have treated flossing casually with children. Their teeth have gaps, which is generally enough space to allow brushing to clean between and around each tooth. Now, more and more dentists are asking that children start flossing right away. The reasoning is habit. At EQ Dental, we want to help your child establish good oral habits from the beginning. By teaching children that flossing is just part of the brushing experience, you are setting them up for a lifetime of flossing.

Are Flossing Sticks Recommended?

Many of our patients have liked the ease of flossing sticks. This decision is entirely up to the patient, the goal is to remove plaque and food from between your teeth. Parents have also reported that flossing sticks work well with children because it provides a handle for them to grasp..

Is it normal to bleed when flossing?

This idea is common, but it is not true. It is not normal to bleed when flossing. Bleeding when you floss is an indication of gum disease. Meaning, food particles have traveled below the gum line causing them to become irritated and infected.

Gum disease in its early form can generally be relieved from a dental cleaning with our trained hygienist and should be taken seriously. The problem will not go away if ignored. Gum disease is a progressive disease that in its advanced form can lead to the loss of your teeth.

Please contact us if you have any questions about flossing.
